The science
Why the forest feels different — and why that matters for you
Dappled light, birdsong, running water: all of it carries a rhythm called 1/f fluctuation, and your nervous system has been listening for it all along.
Hakone forest bathing tours · Within easy reach of Tokyo
Guided shinrin-yoku in the rich forests of Hakone. A certified forest bathing session, led slowly. Lie down and let the forest do its work.
What this is
Most people come to Hakone and keep moving. Ropeway, lake cruise, shrine, photo, train. They leave as tired as they arrived.
Forest bathing is the opposite instruction. We walk slowly. We stop often. We sit, and where the ground allows, we lie down and look up through the canopy — the moment when the nervous system finally lets go.
Everyone is welcome, whatever your fitness. All you need is somewhere quiet, someone who knows the forest, and permission to stop. That is the whole practice.
Four walks
The Easy category has two tours: Introductory Shinrin-yoku and the longer Immersive Shinrin-yoku at the Lakeshore. The Temple and Valley walks add progressively more climbing. The practice stays slow and attentive throughout.

Why it works
Shinrin-yoku has been studied in Japan for decades. Time spent in forest environments produces measurable falls in cortisol, blood pressure and heart rate. This is measured, published science.
Part of the explanation is a phenomenon called 1/f fluctuation, or yuragi: the rhythm that sits exactly between order and randomness. Dappled light through leaves has it. A mountain stream has it. So do your own heartbeat and breathing.
Forest bathing is its own practice. Posture, stillness and ground contact matter deeply.
Your guide
I was born and raised at the foot of the Hakone mountains. For years I guided people across the mountains in Japan — long days, good distances, real hikes. I still do, under Coconuts Hike Japan.
Sometimes the moments we remembered most were the pauses: the light through the trees, the sound of water, the ten minutes we sat together in easy silence.
So I trained as a shinrin-yoku facilitator, and Breathe Hakone grew from that learning. Hiking taught me how to move through the mountains; shinrin-yoku taught me how much can happen when we slow down and pay attention.
