Before you step into the forest

This Hakone forest bathing FAQ gives clear answers about the walks, access, weather, what to bring and how booking works.

The questions guests ask us most

Forest bathing is simple once you are in the forest, but planning the day can raise plenty of practical questions. These answers are specific to Breathe Hakone and our four guided walks.

01

The experience

What forest bathing feels like and how to choose your walk.

What happens during a forest bathing session?

We walk slowly, pause often and use simple invitations that bring attention to sound, scent, texture and light. Depending on the route and weather, the session can include sitting quietly, tea and time resting on a ground mat beneath the canopy. See our step-by-step forest bathing session for a visual explanation.

Is forest bathing a hike or a form of meditation?

It is neither a fitness hike nor a formal meditation class. Forest bathing is a guided wellbeing practice built around slowing down and noticing the forest through the senses. No meditation experience or particular belief is required. For a fuller introduction, read What is shinrin-yoku?

Which Breathe Hakone walk should I choose?

Choose beginner forest bathing in Hakone for the gentlest and shortest experience; the Lake Ashi forest bathing experience for a longer immersion on easy terrain; Hakone forest bathing and onsen for forest, culture and bathing; or the Hakone forest bathing hike for the most active terrain.

Choosing between the two gentle options? Compare Introductory and Lakeshore.

Is forest bathing medical treatment?

No. Breathe Hakone offers a guided wellbeing practice, not medical treatment. Tell us before booking about mobility needs, pregnancy, severe allergies or health conditions that could affect your safety on the route.

02

Terrain & access

Choose the route that fits your body and your day.

How gentle is the introductory walk?

Introductory Shinrin-yoku is mostly level, with one short gentle slope at the beginning. Please contact us before booking if you have questions about the terrain or mobility.

Do I need to be fit?

The level depends on the walk. Introductory Shinrin-yoku is gentle and mostly level, while the Valley walk is strenuous. Each walk page describes its terrain honestly, and the diagrams on Plan Your Visit show the four profiles side by side.

Can children join?

Yes, any age, and children pay the same price. Introductory Shinrin-yoku is the route we recommend for families. For the Valley walk, the climb is hard, so we advise against bringing young children.

03

Weather & preparation

A small day bag is usually enough.

What should I wear and bring?

Bring comfortable shoes with grip, water, a warm layer and rain protection. Hakone can be several degrees cooler than central Tokyo. Hiking boots are only recommended for the Valley walk. We provide ground mats. See the visual packing guide on Plan Your Visit.

What happens if it rains?

Sessions go ahead in light rain when conditions are safe. We adapt ground-rest activities in very wet conditions.

If you cancel: cancel at least 24 hours before the scheduled start time (Japan time) for a full refund. One free date change by the same deadline, subject to availability. Less than 24 hours before: no refund and no free date change. No-show: no refund and no rescheduling.

If we cancel for unsafe conditions (typhoon, heavy rain or snow warning, lightning, strong wind, trail closure, volcanic alert): you choose a full refund or a new date.

Bookings made through Airbnb, Viator, GetYourGuide or Klook follow that platform's policy. Bookings already confirmed before 12 October 2026 keep the terms they were booked under.

Read the booking terms and our Hakone rain guide.

Will photographs be taken?

Aki brings his camera on every tour and provides photos to guests who would like them and consent to being photographed. Forest bathing focuses on the experience, so fewer photos may be taken. You are welcome to decline photography; we respect your choice.

Do the walks run year-round?

Sessions are offered throughout the year, subject to route and weather conditions. Spring brings new leaves, summer is deeply green, autumn is crisp and colourful, and winter opens the forest canopy. Bring a warmer layer than you would wear in central Tokyo.

04

Travel & booking

From Tokyo to the correct meeting point.

Where do the walks meet?

Introductory Shinrin-yoku meets at Moto-Hakone Port. Immersive Shinrin-yoku at the Lakeshore meets at Hakone-en. Temple Forest Walk and Onsen meets at Odawara Station, at Beck's Coffee. Hakone Valley Walk & Forest Bathing meets outside the ticket gates at Hakone-Yumoto Station. Your booking confirmation gives the exact meeting instructions.

What time do the walks start and finish?

From April to October, Introductory, Lakeshore and Valley walks start at 9:00 or 13:00; from November to March, they start at 9:00 or 12:00. Introductory finishes at about 11:00, 15:00 or 14:00 respectively. Lakeshore and Valley finish at about 12:30, 16:30 or 15:30 respectively. The Temple walk starts at 9:00 year-round and finishes at about 15:00.

Where do the walks finish?

Introductory finishes at Moto-Hakone Port. Lakeshore finishes at Hakone-en. Temple finishes at Daiyuzan Station. Valley finishes at a local wagashi shop in Hakone-Yumoto, a few minutes from the station. Staying in Sengokuhara? After the Introductory or Lakeshore walk, we drive home that way and are happy to give you a free lift to your hotel in Sengokuhara. Tell us when you book; car space is limited, so please ask early.

Can I take the Romancecar from Shinjuku?

Yes. If you are staying on the Shinjuku side of Tokyo, Odakyu's Limited Express Romancecar runs directly from Shinjuku Station to Hakone-Yumoto in about 85–90 minutes. All seats are reserved, so book ahead for a morning tour. See our complete access guide and check the official Odakyu website for current schedules.

Do I need the Hakone Freepass?

No. The Hakone Freepass is never required for our tours. It may be worthwhile if you also plan to use several Hakone buses, trains, the ropeway or the Lake Ashi sightseeing cruise. Our tour-by-tour Freepass guide explains when it is likely to save money.

Are lunch, onsen and wagashi included?

Tea or coffee served by Aki is included on every forest bathing walk. Tea, amazake and other drinks purchased at teahouses or shops are not included. On the Temple walk, bring about ¥6,000 cash per person for the local train, lunch and onsen. On the Valley walk, sweets and drinks at the shop are paid by you.

Can I use the onsen if I have tattoos?

No. The onsen on the Temple walk does not admit tattooed guests. You can skip the bath and have tea instead; the price is the same.
