Can I manage it?

Compare the terrain of the four walks

Introductory or Lakeshore? Compare the two easy walks before deciding.

The single most common question we're asked. These schematic profiles compare the terrain; they are not measured elevation charts.

The practice is identical in all four. Only the ground changes. If you are unsure, choose flatter — you lose nothing of the forest bathing by not climbing.

Still unsure

Which walk is for you?

Choose the time and terrain that suit you. History and culture are optional.

Before choosing, compare walk prices, inclusions and extra costs. Visiting with children? Read our family guide. For a day from Tokyo, see the Hakone wellness day-trip guide.

1 · How much time do you have?

2 · How does your body feel about hills?

3 · What would you like more of? (optional)

Choose a time and terrain and we'll point you to the right walk.

Before you come

What to bring, what we bring

You bring

Very little

Comfortable shoes with grip
Water
A warm layer — Hakone is cooler than Tokyo in autumn and winter
Light rain protection — Hakone weather can change quickly

We bring

Everything else

Ground mats for lying down
Tea on every walk
shop orders, local train, lunch and onsen fees are separate where stated
Simple sensory invitations to help you slow down
A facilitator with deep local knowledge
No hiking boots are needed except on the Valley Walk, and no meditation experience is needed anywhere. We bring mats, tea and simple sensory invitations, and keep the pace unhurried. We continue in light rain. If conditions become unsafe and we cancel, you choose a full refund or a new date.

See the Breathe Hakone FAQ for weather, accessibility, booking and meeting-point questions.

When to come

The forest is never the same twice

Guests ask which season is best. The honest answer: they give different things. Here is what each one offers the senses.

Spring · March–May

New growth, soft light, birdsong at its loudest. The forest smells green.

Best for first-timers

Summer · June–September

Humid, but the cedar canopy holds deep shade and phytoncide levels are at their highest. Hydrangeas in June.

Best for the sense of smell

Autumn · October–November

Crisp air, colour in the broadleaf, the ground soft with fallen leaves. The most comfortable ground rest of the year.

Aki's favourite

Winter · December–February

Cold, clear and almost empty. Sound travels further. Tea has never mattered more.

Best for silence
We run sessions year-round. When conditions are safe, we adapt the ground-rest practice for wet weather. If conditions are unsafe and we cancel, you choose a full refund or a new date; a new date is subject to availability. Plan a wet day with our Hakone forest bathing rain guide, or build a complete day with the Hakone wellness itinerary.
