The Hakone Ashinoko Forest Therapy Base is an officially recognised lakeside forest area managed by Hakone Town. It is a place you can visit; it is not the name of a Breathe Hakone tour.
The official designation
What the Hakone Forest Therapy Base means
Hakone Town states that the Hakone Ashinoko Forest Therapy Base was certified in March 2016. The designation identifies forest environments and walking roads intended for restful time in nature.
Breathe Hakone is independent of the town's base. We describe our own work as guided forest bathing or shinrin-yoku, not medical treatment. The official base is relevant because it confirms the suitability of the wider Lake Ashi landscape for slow forest walking.
Place and practice are different.
The base is a designated place. Forest bathing is a way of spending time in a forest. A guide can provide structure, but no special label is required for you to slow down safely and respectfully in a public forest.
Around Lake Ashi
The two forest areas
Hakone Yasuragi no Mori
A town forest on the southern side of Lake Ashi with walking routes and nature information. It is reached from the Moto-Hakone and Hakone-machi side of the lake.
Kuzuryu no Mori
A lakeside woodland associated with the Hakone-en side of Lake Ashi and the Kuzuryu area. Check current access information before visiting.
The two areas are not one continuous visitor facility with a single entrance. Lake transport, local buses, seasonal conditions and opening information can change, so use the town and operator websites when planning.
Plan independently
How to visit the base respectfully
- Choose one area rather than trying to cross the whole lake in one session.
- Check current official access, weather and any posted closures.
- Stay on permitted routes and follow local rules.
- Keep distance and speed modest; spend time in one place.
- Carry out everything you bring in and do not disturb plants or wildlife.
Hakone's transport network uses several operators. A pass may cover some services and not others. Use our Hakone access guide as orientation, then confirm details on the official operator site.
